COVID-19 and Flu Cases Rise in France, Prompting New Vaccination Campaign
Foix, France – September 4, 2025 – A surge in COVID-19 cases, coupled with the simultaneous circulation of influenza viruses, is raising concerns across France, notably within vulnerable populations. Emergency room visits for suspected COVID-19 increased by 20% among those under 15 and 12% among individuals aged 15-74 between August 25 and 31, according to the latest weekly public health bulletin. This uptick coincides with the emergence of a new, highly virulent COVID-19 variant dubbed ”Frankenstein” – officially designated XFG – prompting health officials to prepare for a renewed public health response.
The situation is particularly acute in geriatric care facilities, where residents are especially susceptible to severe illness. “Now we are systematic with testing,” explains Lawrence Bories, head of the chiva geriatrics pole.”It has become an emergency reflex, or in geriatrics services, as we also have cases of flu A.Previously, we only tested for COVID. Today, we’ve implemented 3-in-1 tests for COVID, Flu, and Influenza.” Retirement homes like the Ehpad de Foix are already establishing waiting lists for the upcoming national vaccination campaign.
The rise in respiratory illnesses comes as pharmacies work to replenish test supplies in anticipation of increased demand. A nationwide vaccination campaign targeting both flu and COVID-19 is scheduled to begin on October 14, aiming to protect vulnerable individuals and alleviate pressure on the healthcare system.Health authorities are closely monitoring the spread of the XFG variant and its potential impact on hospital capacity.
