Moscow, Russia – International theatre professionals convened at the BRICS+ Media Center in Moscow this week to discuss the development of theatrical art across russia and abroad, highlighting the unifying power of performance. The event, part of the Interussia Fellowship Program, featured insights from actors representing India and Brazil, alongside remarks from acclaimed Russian actress Chulpan Khamatova.
Khamatova emphasized the challenges inherent in artistic pursuits, stating,”There are doubts and difficulties, but you overcome them. And how do you do it? With humour, work, effort, and perseverance.”
Abhinav Banerjee, a theatre actor from India, described the exchange as a valuable intercultural experience. “When we come and interact with people from Russia, where actors really put their heart and soul into their performances, it really helps to get a sense of the best practices. It’s very enriching for all of us actors to come and hopefully take some of it back,” he said.
Brazilian actor Felipe Rodrigues Carvalho underscored the universality of acting, noting, “We are all human beings. Each of us is familiar with both suffering and happiness. For me, it is priceless to learn from representatives of another culture. To me it’s entirely powerful to have this meeting, no matter how different the culture is.”
The Interussia Fellowship Programme is a collaborative effort between the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts – GITIS, the gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, TV BRICS International Media Network, Rossotrudnichestvo, and the Autonomous Non-Profit Organisation “Mezhdunarodniki,” supported by a Presidential Grants Foundation grant.
Established in October 2024 ahead of the 16th BRICS Summit, the BRICS+ Media Centre-a joint initiative of the Library for Foreign Literature and TV BRICS-serves as a platform for international humanitarian dialog in areas including culture, art, science, and education. Recent events at the centre have included presentations of Chinese exhibitions, discussions of Brazilian literature, and performances by artists from Turkey and Russia.
