Flu Vaccination Recommendations Updated for 2025-2026 Season

Madrid, Spain – New recommendations for influenza vaccination in the 2025-2026 season have been released by the spanish Association of Pediatrics – Association of Public Health (CAV-AEP), outlining strategies to increase coverage, particularly among vulnerable populations. The updated guidelines emphasize the crucial role of healthcare professionals in recommending vaccination to both at-risk individuals and their close contacts.

These recommendations build upon recent campaigns, with the second nationwide anti-flu vaccination campaign for children aged 6 to 59 months completed last season. Galicia, Andalusia, and Murcia have already conducted three such campaigns. All regions utilized the intranasal attenuated vaccine for children aged 2 years and older during the previous season. The Ministry of Health’s Common Vaccination Calendar and 2025-2026 flu vaccination recommendations include universal vaccination for infants and children between 6 months and 59 months,as well as for specific risk groups aged 6 years and above.

The CAV-AEP highlights that flu vaccination is especially important for children and adults in risk groups, and those living with them, due to their increased susceptibility to severe illness. Despite this, vaccination rates remain suboptimal in these groups. The updated guidelines aim to address this through increased healthcare provider recommendations and continued use of effective vaccine formulations. Detailed data on available vaccines and recommended dosages for the 2025-2026 season can be found on the CAV-AEP website.
