M6 Pulls Daily Drama “New Day” After Plummeting Ratings
Montpellier, France – French television network M6 has abruptly cancelled its new daily drama series, “New Day,” just three months after its June 30th debut, citing “catastrophic” viewership numbers. The decision, announced Monday, signals a swift end to the production filmed around Montpellier and at the Château de capion in Aniane.
The cancellation underscores the challenges of launching new daily soap operas in a crowded television landscape. “New Day” struggled to attract an audience, with ratings falling to approximately 250,000 viewers in early September-far below the network’s expectations. M6 attributes the failure to both audience saturation within the genre-making “New Day” the sixth daily soap opera currently airing on French television-and the series’ inability to gain traction with linear viewers.
Despite a late-August schedule shift from 8:40 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., viewership did not improve. M6 will continue filming through october 26th to complete a conclusive storyline for viewers. Remaining, previously unaired episodes will be exclusively available on the M6+ streaming platform starting Tuesday, September 23rd.
M6 acknowledged the dedication of the cast-including Helena Noguerra, Bruno Solo, and Laetitia Milot-and the production team, stating, “The chain thanked all the actors, the authors, the directors, the technicians and all the production teams who worked with passion and enthusiasm on this project, hailed by critics, but who unfortunately did not meet the public.” Episodes of “cleaning scenes” and “one day, a doc” will air in the series’ timeslot beginning tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
