Sarah McLachlan Returns with “Better Broken,” First Album in Over a Decade
LOUISVILLE, KY – After a 13-year recording hiatus, singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan has released her new album, “Better broken,” today. The album marks a significant return for the artist, known for hits like “Angel” and ”Building a Mystery,” and features collaborations with her daughters, Kira and Taryn.
The album’s release coincides with a new documentary, “Lilith fair: Building A Mystery,” premiering Sunday, which revisits the groundbreaking all-female music festival McLachlan founded in the 1990s. Lilith Fair challenged industry norms that resisted featuring women artists consecutively on radio or tour bills. McLachlan, alongside artists like Paula Cole,Sheryl Crow,Erykah Badu, and Missy elliott, proved the concept’s success, creating one of the most triumphant tours in the country.
“Sarah McLachlan destroyed that notion,” said Kyle Meredith, program director and host at WFPK in Louisville, discussing the festival’s impact. ”She grabbed Paula Cole. They went on tour. That built into a much bigger tour…and of course, it had a fantastic soundtrack to go along with.”
The documentary highlights the festival’s lasting influence, with contemporary artist Olivia Rodrigo expressing her surprise at learning about Lilith Fair and its significance.
Meredith noted that a track on “Better Broken” feels notably relevant, describing it as “a song for 2025…very present, very now, very real for this moment,” and an “anthem for women’s rights.” McLachlan has been advocating for women’s rights for 30 years, and this song reflects that commitment.
