Dugarry Criticizes Hütter‘s Approach Following Monaco‘s champions League Defeat
MONACO – Former French international christophe Dugarry sharply criticized AS Monaco manager Adi Hütter following teh team’s 4-1 loss to Club Brugge in their Champions League group stage opener on September 20, 2025. Dugarry, appearing on RMC’s Rothen ignites programme, accused Hütter of underestimating the Belgian champions and displaying arrogance in his match readiness.
The defeat – marked by three first-half goals conceded and a missed penalty from Maghnes Akliouche, despite a consolation goal from Ansu Fati – represents a disappointing start to Monaco’s European campaign. Dugarry’s critique centers on Hütter’s team selection and overall tactical approach, suggesting a lack of preparedness and respect for the opposition. This loss impacts Monaco’s chances of progressing from Group A and raises questions about Hütter’s strategy as the team navigates a challenging Champions League schedule.
“When I see such a mess from the team, I think the coach couldn’t find the words,” Dugarry stated. “Above all, I think he has underestimated his opponent. We have to stop thinking that Ligue 1 is much better than this Belgian championship, there are many teams that do a lot of European cups. (…) I think the coach once again wanted to put an offensive team, as he has been doing as the start of the season. There were certainly absent but I think he had apprehended this match, he had underestimated this team of Bruges. He could not explain to his players what they were going to live, against whom they were going to fall, and I think there was a preparation problem.”
Dugarry further elaborated, “I think there was a certain form of arrogance on the part of the coach in his match preparation. On a first C1 first game, maybe he should have arrived with a little more modesty, an additional player in the midfield… I think he was wrong in his team composition and his approach to the match.”
