Iowa Receives $1.3 Million Boost for Homelessness Prevention Efforts
Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Finance Authority (IFA) has allocated $1.335 million in grants to 15 organizations across the state dedicated to preventing homelessness, officials announced today. the funding, drawn from the agency’s fiscal year 2026 Emergency and Innovative Housing Fund, aims to provide crucial support to individuals and families at risk of losing their housing.
This new Iowa Homelessness Prevention Fund expands on a previous Rapid Rehousing Project Pilot Program, offering flexible assistance like short-term financial aid, landlord-tenant mediation, housing navigation services, and case management. A key distinction from federal programs is the fund’s broadened eligibility, now including those experiencing “doubling up” or “couch-surfing” – situations especially common among young people and in rural communities. The IFA board approved the allocations, distributing funds to agencies previously involved in the pilot program.
Primary health Care in Central Iowa is among the recipients, receiving an $80,600 grant. The program seeks to address a growing need for preventative measures, intervening before individuals and families enter the cycle of homelessness. A complete list of grant awardees can be found here.
