Western Nile Virus Cases Rising in the Laurentians: Public Health Alert

– Laurentians,Quebec

The CISSS des Laurentides is warning‍ residents about an increased risk of West Nile virus,a⁣ potentially⁤ serious infection transmitted through mosquito bites. As‌ of late summer 2024, health officials have identified eleven cases‌ within the region, with nine ⁤confirmed to ‍have ⁢been contracted locally.

Transmission of ‌the virus requires a cycle: mosquitoes become infected by feeding on birds that carry the virus.‍ This makes⁤ late‍ summer and early fall a particularly critical period for preventative measures, as mosquitoes have had ample⁣ time to become ‌carriers.

To mitigate risk, the‍ CISSS recommends utilizing insect repellents containing DEET or icaridine. Residents are‌ also ‍urged to eliminate standing water around their properties - a breeding ground for mosquitoes – and take‌ other proactive steps to avoid⁣ mosquito bites.

The period of highest risk for West Nile virus⁣ infection extends from April through ⁣the frist frost of the season.

While most individuals infected with West Nile virus experience mild symptoms, or no symptoms at all, it can ‍cause ⁣serious neurological illness⁢ in some cases. Prevention is⁢ key.

CISSS des Laurentides‌ Public Health Advisory

Symptoms of West Nile virus can include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, ⁢vomiting, ‌and rash. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should consult a healthcare ⁣professional.
