Canada Asylum Surge: US Immigration Policies Drive Record Applications

Asylum Claims Surge at Canada‌ Border Following Increased U.S. ‍ICE ⁤Raids

OTTAWA – A significant increase in asylum‌ claims from U.S. citizens is ⁤being reported at the Canada-U.S.border, coinciding with intensified raids by ⁣U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). canadian authorities have observed⁤ a surge in individuals illegally crossing the border, seeking refugee status,‌ particularly‍ between‍ July and ⁣August.

The rise in crossings is believed to be driven, in part, by U.S.-born children⁤ with parents‍ residing ‌in ‍the U.S.without legal status, seeking refuge‍ in Canada. While U.S. law ‌grants automatic⁣ citizenship to those born within its⁣ borders, former President Trump had attempted to alter ⁤these provisions. The‌ Safe ⁤Third country Agreement excludes U.S. citizens ⁣from claiming asylum in Canada.

As of this year, a total ‍of 1,125 people have been apprehended attempting to enter Canada ⁣illegally from the U.S. and have‌ been ⁤repatriated.⁤ U.S. Customs and‌ Border Protection ⁤(CBP)⁣ has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the situation.

The original Bloomberg article, “Migrants‍ Flee ⁢US for Canada ⁢After‍ ICE Agents Intensify⁢ Raids,” contributed to this report.
