Commanders Rally Around Marcus Mariota as Potential Starter Amidst Daniels‘ Absence
ASHBURN, VA – Commanders players expressed strong confidence in veteran quarterback Marcus mariota following Thursday’s practice, signaling a unified front should he be called upon to start Sunday’s game. The potential for Mariota to take the helm stems from Sam Howell‘s injury and rookie Jayden Daniels’ limited practice participation this week.
Mariota, who last started a game nearly three years ago, has impressed teammates with his preparation and poise. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel affirmed, “Marcus is still in this league for a reason. He’s been playing well whenever his name’s been called.”
The veteran quarterback has been taking first-team reps during practice with Daniels sidelined. Despite missing most of training camp and all three preseason games due to tendinitis, Mariota stated he feels prepared, attributing his readiness to extensive mental reps during his recovery.
Terry McLaurin, who caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Mariota against the Cowboys – a drive culminating in three total touchdowns and a 15-of-18 passing performance for 161 yards – highlighted their established chemistry. “Marcus and I have had a lot of reps together,” McLaurin said. “The timing is there. The great thing about it is that we’re both vets, and we have a good feel of this offense and what it’s supposed to look like. So, if he started this week, we would have a lot of confidence we’re gonna have a chance to win the game.”
Mariota acknowledged the notable impact of the team’s support. “I think that’s what’s been awesome about this team…just the brotherhood, the connection. Knowing that the guys have my back gives me confidence.” He emphasized his consistent preparation, stating he always approaches practice as if he will be starting, ensuring a seamless transition if needed.
