Dave Bautista Admits to ‘Bit of Envy’ Over John cena’s Peacemaker Role
Dave Bautista acknowledges feeling a pang of envy watching John Cena’s acclaimed performance as Peacemaker, a role initially envisioned for him by James Gunn. While Bautista ultimately understands why he wasn’t the right fit, recognizing Cena brought a unique comedic timing and vulnerability to the character, he admits to a slight disappointment.
Bautista reflected on the casting decision, stating that he respects gunn’s choice and doesn’t harbor resentment. He pointed to his own casting as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy, acknowledging that another actor might have brought a different, equally valid interpretation to the role. This highlights the significant impact casting choices have on a project’s final form. Bautista believes that had he played Peacemaker, the character likely wouldn’t have resonated enough to warrant the spin-off series Peacemaker, especially considering the character’s apparent death at the end of The Suicide Squad.
Despite missing out on Peacemaker, Bautista remains open to future collaborations within the DC Universe, having previously expressed interest in portraying Bane. He is currently focused on diversifying his roles, with his next project being the romantic comedy The Romantic, recently acquired by Paramount Pictures. Peacemaker Season 2 is set to premiere on August 21, 2025, with weekly episodes releasing on Thursdays.
