Kraków Crash: Driver Faces Charges After Teen Passenger Dies
Kraków, Poland – A 26-year-old man is facing up to 20 years in prison after a crash in Kraków last Wednesday left a 16-year-old passenger dead and multiple others injured. The incident occurred around 1:30 AM at the intersection of al. Mickiewicza and ul. Reymont when the vehicle driven by Piotr B. veered off the road,striking lighting poles and trees.
The crash highlights the dangers of impaired driving and raises questions about judicial decisions regarding pre-trial detention in serious cases. The driver, identified as Piotr B., registered alcohol levels of 0.58 mg/l and 0.51 mg/l in breathalyzer tests. Prosecutors allege he was exceeding the 50 km/h speed limit in effect at the time of the accident. While the prosecutor’s office sought temporary detention for the suspect, the Kraków-Krowodrza District Court declined the request, opting instead for police supervision, a contact ban wiht victims, and a property surety.
according to the Kraków-Krowodrza District Prosecutor’s Office, Piotr B.has been charged with causing a road accident under the influence of alcohol resulting in death and bodily harm to other passengers.Four other individuals were hospitalized following the crash.
Despite the charges and the severity of the incident,the court did not approve the prosecutor’s request for detention. The Kraków-Krowodrza District Prosecutor’s Office has announced it will appeal the court’s decision.
