Sky Announces 900 Job Cuts as It ‍Adapts to Streaming Competition

London – Sky is putting 900 roles at risk as part of a major restructuring aimed at competing with US streaming services, the company⁣ announced⁣ today. The cuts will⁤ impact staff across the UK and Ireland, primarily in customer service and technology ‍roles, as Sky accelerates its shift towards digital communications.

The move comes as Sky navigates a rapidly evolving media landscape, increasingly dominated by streaming giants and a consumer preference for online content. ⁢According to ‌the company, the restructuring is⁣ designed to make Sky “future-ready” by prioritizing digital channels over traditional phone-based customer support. This announcement follows previous job cuts at Sky, including approximately 800 positions eliminated in January 2024⁣ as customers increasingly opt for “plug-and-go” internet-based products rather than traditional pay-TV installations.

Last⁣ year, Sky also⁤ entered into a significant deal with Warner Bros Discovery, resulting in the loss of ⁢exclusive broadcasting rights for ‍certain programs. This agreement will see Warner Bros Discovery’s HBO Max streaming service become ⁣available through‌ Sky platforms.

The⁤ company stated ⁣the changes are necessary to ensure long-term growth and competitiveness in a ‍challenging market. Affected employees will be offered support, including redeployment opportunities where possible.
