Romania summoned the Russian ambassador Monday following the finding of debris from what officials believe was a Russian drone on its territory, marking the second NATO member to report such an incident amid escalating attacks during the Ukraine-Russia war. The Romanian Ministry of Defense confirmed the finding, stating the debris was detected in a field near the village of Plauru, in tulcea county, bordering ukraine.
The incursion follows similar reports from Poland over the weekend, where fragments of a missile-believed to be Ukrainian-landed near the Polish-Ukrainian border. Both incidents underscore the growing risk of the conflict spilling over into NATO territory, raising concerns about collective security and prompting calls for increased vigilance. While officials in both countries have stressed there is no evidence of intentional targeting, the events have triggered diplomatic responses and renewed debate about bolstering air defenses.
Ukraine’s air force reported Russia launched 87 drones and missiles in an overnight strike, with 59 drones shot down but 25 hits recorded in 13 locations. Together,Ukraine has intensified its drone strikes on Russian soil, reportedly hitting a meaningful oil refinery in russia’s northwestern Leningrad region overnight, sparking a fire. Kyiv asserts these strikes aim to disrupt Moscow’s war efforts, targeting facilities like the Kirishi refinery, operated by Surgutneftegas, which has an annual output of nearly 17.7 million metric tons of crude.
