Mariners‘ Cal Raleigh Matches Mantle, Breaks Receiving Home Run Record
SEATTLE – Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners hit his 43rd home run of the season Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels, equaling Mickey Mantle’s total of 54 home runs in a single season and setting a new MLB record for home runs by a catcher. Raleigh’s first-inning blast off Kyle Hendricks also surpassed the previous record of 42 home runs by a catcher, held by Javy López of the Atlanta Braves in 2003.
raleigh’s achievement places him in rare company, matching a feat last accomplished by Mantle with the New York Yankees in 1961. The Mariners’ catcher is now two home runs shy of tying Ken Griffey jr.’s single-season franchise record of 56, set in both 1997 and 1998. This season marks a career high for Raleigh, surpassing his previous best of 34 home runs in 2023.
The home run,a left-field shot in the first inning,gave the Mariners a 2-0 lead. Raleigh is in his fifth major league season and continues to demonstrate increasing power at the plate.
