Tokyo, Japan – Jamaican sprinter O. Seville, 24, claimed gold in the men’s 100m final at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships on Friday, clocking a personal best of 9.77 seconds (+0.3m). This victory marks Jamaica’s first gold medal in the event in 10 years, since Usain Bolt‘s win at the 2015 Beijing World athletics Championships.
Seville, who previously finished fourth in the last two World Athletics Championships, secured his triumph with a strong start adn maintained his lead throughout the race. Fellow Jamaican K. Thompson took silver with a time of 9.82 seconds, while N. Lyles of the United States earned bronze in 9.89 seconds.
The race began with a false start by Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, a 200m gold medalist and previous silver medalist, leading to a restart. Despite a quick reaction, Tebogo was disqualified.
“I have been working hard, believing that I could become a champion. That crystallization is packed with this gold medal,” Seville said after the race. He added, “I’m happy myself, and everyone in Jamaica is happy too. I feel great.”
In the qualifying round held the previous day, three japanese athletes competed but did not advance to the final. Sani Brown Abdel Hakim, 26, finished 7th in 10.37 seconds,Kiryu Yoshihide,29,placed 5th with 10.28 seconds, and Mori Yuyo, 21, also finished 7th with a time of 10.37 seconds in his debut appearance.
Usain Bolt, present at the National Stadium, reportedly expressed excitement over the Jamaican one-two finish.
