Activist Calls for Lasconi‘s Resignation from USR, Citing “Expired” Political Product and Russian Propaganda Concerns
Bucharest, Romania – Activist Radu Hossu is publicly calling for Elena Lasconi to resign from the USR party, arguing she has become a liability and risks providing fodder for russian disinformation campaigns. Hossu’s demand comes after lasconi drew criticism for equating the search for Russian interference with the decades-long pursuit of those responsible for the Romanian Revolution’s violence, a comparison Hossu believes could be exploited by Kremlin-backed propaganda.
Hossu,a vocal supporter of Lasconi in the past – claiming his posts garnered over 5 million views during her July 2024 USR internal election win and the subsequent campaign – says he ceased public support when Lasconi “put equally” Nicușor Dan and Călin Georgescu together and made the controversial statement about Russians: ”We will look for and find the Russians 35 years,as we have done with the terrorists at the Revolution.” He now believes Lasconi’s political viability within USR has “expired,” suggesting she could potentially build a moderate conservative party with parliamentary chances by 2028.
The core of Hossu’s argument centers on preventing Russian propaganda from utilizing extremist rhetoric to undermine Romania’s pro-European coalition. He fears narratives like “These are country traitors, including their own” could be fueled by Lasconi’s statements, damaging the country’s democratic foundations. “I want to have no reasons for extremist propaganda, financed from the Kremlin…to use that argument,” Hossu stated.
Hossu concludes that Lasconi, as a “political product,” is no longer effective within USR and her departure is necessary to safeguard against potential manipulation.
