Sao Paulo will crown a first-time WTA champion on Sunday, as Indonesia‘s Janice Tjen and Madagascar’s Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah both secured victories in Saturday’s semifinals.
Tjen, 23, overcame great Britain’s Francesca Jones 7-6(0), 6-3, in a one hour and 32 minute contest. The win marks a historic achievement, making Tjen only the third Indonesian woman to reach a WTA final in the Open Era. After a accomplished collegiate career at Pepperdine, Tjen is quickly making her mark on the professional tour.
The Indonesian fired eight aces and won an notable 89 percent of her first-serve points during the match.
Tjen boasts a 63-12 record across all levels of competition in 2025. This marks her second tour-level event, following her debut at the U.S. Open last month.
“It’s special,” Tjen shared after her victory. “It’s my first WTA tournament outside of a Grand Slam, and being able to reach the final is a bonus. But at the end of the day, it’s just another match so I’ll see how I do tomorrow.”
Standing between Tjen and the title is 19-year-old rakotomanga Rajaonah, who defeated Mexico’s Renata Zarazua 6-3, 6-2, in one hour and 20 minutes. The French teenager is competing in just her third main-draw appearance at tour level, and her first on a hard court surface.
Sunday’s final guarantees a new champion will be crowned. Regardless of the outcome, this week represents a career milestone for both Tjen and Rakotomanga Rajaonah.
