US Republicans Push for Russia Sanctions tied to Government Funding
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged international partners to end all excuses and impose sanctions on Russia, specifically calling for a halt to the purchase of Russian oil. This call comes as two US Republican lawmakers attempt to force stronger sanctions against Russia by attaching thier bill to a crucial government funding package.
Senators Lindsey Graham and Representative Brian Fitzpatrick announced Saturday they will lobby colleagues across the political spectrum this week to support the measure, stating, “We will ask our colleagues in both parties to join us in order to advance this legislation and to stand at the side of freedom against tyranny. Time is pushing.”
The proposed legislation, stalled for months due to reluctance from President Donald Trump, includes secondary sanctions targeting countries like India and China if they continue to import Russian oil.Trump has reportedly favored tariffs on Indian goods instead. Though, the urgent need to pass a government funding bill may now provide leverage for the Republican lawmakers to push their sanctions plan forward.
Graham and Fitzpatrick welcomed Trump’s recent statement indicating a willingness to consider new measures against Russia, but only if all NATO countries cease purchasing Russian oil and implement similar actions. They beleive a combined strategy of sanctions, tariffs, and continued arms sales to Ukraine is essential to compel Russian President Putin to negotiate a peaceful resolution.
The White House has yet to comment on the lawmakers’ plan.
