The legendary goaltender has been offered a tryout contract to play in a preseason game, offering a possible final chapter with the team that drafted him.
Pittsburgh Penguins fans may have one last chance to see Marc-André Fleury in a Penguins uniform. After 13 seasons and 691 games with the franchise, the team has extended a tryout contract to the 40-year-old goaltender, allowing him to participate in their September 27th preseason game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas expressed the organization’s enthusiasm, stating, “The whole organization of the Penguins is honored to welcome Marc-André Fleury back on the ice at Pittsburgh.” Dubas continued, emphasizing Fleury’s impact beyond his on-ice achievements: “Last year, everyone could see how much marc is loved and respected in the world of hockey, but this worship goes beyond his distinctions and his career. Marc represents a lot for our team, our supporters and the city of Pittsburgh, due to the person he is and the example he has given. The Penguins believe that he and his family fully deserve this chance to celebrate this moment of return where it all started, in front of the supporters of the black and Gold club.”
Fleury’s history with the Penguins is steeped in success. A three-time Stanley Cup champion with Pittsburgh (winning in 2009, 2016, and 2017), he was originally drafted by the team in 2003. Throughout his illustrious NHL career, Fleury has amassed a total of 1,051 games played, also spending time with the Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild.
