Norwegian Cross-Country Star Heidi Weng Reveals Challenging Year Following Breakup adn fracture
TRONDHEIM, Norway – Cross-country skier Heidi Weng disclosed a difficult year marked by a stress fracture and a personal breakup, impacting her training and performance leading into the upcoming Cortina Olympics.Weng, 34, revealed she spent much of the spring and summer recovering and grappling with the emotional fallout of the split, leading to a significant reduction in her training regimen.
The challenges began after the World Cup in Trondheim in March 2025, where Weng secured two silver medals – in the 5km race and the relay – and finished 8th overall in the World Cup standings. Following the competition, she discovered a stress fracture and concurrently navigated a private separation. Weng admitted to feeling “junk” until August, barely spending time at home in April and May.
“I’ve never been as junk as I’ve been this year. Until August, actually,” Weng stated. She intentionally distanced herself from thoughts of cross-country skiing during her recovery, but ultimately recognized the need to resume training in August. “In August I felt that it was almost autumn, now I had to calm down and start exercising. And then I probably regretted the choice I had made. But… I think this has been good for me after all,” she said.
Weng also kept a message from her now ex-girlfriend private for months, adding another layer of emotional complexity to the period.
With the retirement of Therese Johaug this spring, Weng is now considered the most experienced and prominent female runner on the Norwegian team. The Cortina Olympics represent her primary focus for the coming season.
