Mexico City – Federal authorities apprehended Oscar Antonio Álvarez at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) today, identifying him as the primary financial operator for the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel (CJNG). The arrest marks a important blow to the cartel’s financial infrastructure, disrupting its ability to launder money through property acquisitions and business ventures.
The operation,a collaborative effort between the National Guard, the Mexican Army, the Secretariat of Marina-Armada de México (Semar),and the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Protection (SSPC),stemmed from intelligence gathered by the National Intelligence Center (CNI).Álvarez is accused of organized crime and financial crimes related to handling illicit funds, specifically receiving and transferring resources on behalf of the CJNG. His alleged methods included purchasing real estate and controlling companies within the tequila and livestock industries.According to the Ministry of National Defense, Álvarez has been turned over to the Prosecutor’s office Specialized in Organized Crime (FEMDO) for further examination and legal proceedings. Authorities will now focus on dismantling the financial network allegedly managed by Álvarez and identifying additional assets linked to the CJNG. This arrest signals a continued effort by the Mexican government to target the financial underpinnings of major drug cartels, aiming to weaken their operational capacity and disrupt their criminal activities.
