Støre Faces Pressure⁤ to ⁢Prioritize Climate ⁢as MDG Vows to Block‌ Right-Wing Alliances

Oslo,Norway – September 10,2025 – Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre’s government is bracing for a potentially challenging term ‍as the Green Party (MDG) signals a firm stance against any cooperation with right-leaning parties, notably regarding energy and climate policy.⁢ This development ⁤follows Monday⁢ night’s election results, where the ⁣Progress Party achieved its strongest performance to ⁢date,‌ becoming the second-largest party in parliament.

The outcome places the labour Party in a delicate position. While potential support from⁣ the right could be sought on issues like oil policy,‌ securing ⁢that backing will be arduous, according to Håvard Haarstad of the Center for Climate and Energy Transition at the University of Bergen (UiB). MDG and⁢ the Socialist Left (SV) are ⁤poised to become crucial partners for Støre,potentially forcing a greener agenda.

“Sylvi Listhaug will strongly emphasize that Norwegian value creation and jobs⁤ generate ‌significant income for ‍Norway,” Haarstad explained,‍ referencing the Progress Party’s ⁤leader. “However, the Labor Party will likely be quite ⁢reliant on MDG and SV in many areas.”

MDG intends to⁢ actively prevent Støre from forming⁣ alliances with the right, aiming to ensure the government remains committed to aspiring climate goals. ‌”He must work with us to pass his budgets and maintain government support,” stated Hermstad. “Many voters would be deeply disappointed if Jonas Gahr Støre turned to the right and the Progress Party to enact policies detrimental to Norway.”
