Tuam, Co. Galway – Patricia King, a respected speech and drama teacher and dedicated member of the local theatre community, has died peacefully in Castlebar, County Mayo, surrounded by family. She was 84.
King’s passing marks a loss for generations of students and colleagues in both Galway and Dublin, where she lived and worked. A long-standing member of the Tuam Theatre Guild and accomplished stage actor and director, her influence extended beyond the stage, shaping countless lives through her passion for the performing arts. Funeral arrangements are underway, offering an prospect for the community to celebrate her life and legacy.
Born Patricia Kennedy in Bishop Street, Tuam, and later residing on Mountain View Road, Ranelagh, Dublin, she received a Bachelor of arts degree and a Licentiate of the Teaching Certificate from Trinity College, London (L.T.C.L.). She passed away in the care of Cuan Chaitríona Nursing Home, Castlebar.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gerry King, and her parents, Hugh P. Kennedy and Anne J. Kennedy (née mcnamara), as well as her sister, pauline Murphy, who died in 1964.
Patricia is survived by her children, Feargal, Paula, Louise, Celine, and Aodhán; her sister, Théresè (Terrie) Kearney; sons-in-law Richard Gillespie and Phylip ab owain; daughters-in-law LeShawn Gee, Elizabeth Devine, and Breda Barry; and her seven grandchildren: Kieran, Gearóid, Gwydion, Finola, Arianrhod, Glesni, and Mattie. She is also remembered by her nieces,nephews,extended family,former students,and friends within the theatre and amateur drama world.
Reposing will take place at Grogan’s Funeral Home, Barrack Street, Tuam (H54 Y677) on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m., with removal at 7:00 p.m. to the Cathedral of the Assumption, Tuam.
A Requiem Mass will be held on Friday at 11:30 a.m., followed by burial in the New Cemetery, Newport Road, Castlebar, County Mayo.
