Feijóo Shares Video with ‘My lemon, my Lemon’ and ‘I Like the Fruit‘ reference, Prompting Criticism
MADRID, Sept. 7 (EUROPA PRESS) – Popular Party (PP) leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo posted a video to Instagram on Sunday showing him singing “my lemon, my lemon” in a bar in A Coruña, accompanied by the phrase “I like the fruit.” The phrase was originally used by the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
The reference alludes to a 2023 exchange during Feijóo’s investiture debate.During the debate, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez referenced a previous allegation by Feijóo’s predecessor, Pablo Casado, concerning a potential corruption case involving Ayuso. Sánchez stated casado had ”alerted on a possible case of corruption by the president of the community” and then “evacuated the man married in a blow and throw that case of corruption.” Ayuso, present in the gallery, responded with words some PSOE deputies interpreted as an insult directed at Sánchez.
Ayuso initially quipped that she had said “I like fruit,” but later characterized the accusations as “an ignominy and cowardice,” stating her response – “said for herself” – was “the minimum it deserves.” She further clarified, “Maybe you, who already swallow everything, would do something else, but to my parties, yes, I said it. I said the fruit,” during a plenary session of the assembly.
Feijóo and ayuso held a joint rally this past Friday in arganda del Rey, Madrid, to mark the start of the political season, were they demonstrated unity and defended the PP’s actions regarding the solemn opening of the judicial year. They justified their stance concerning the presence of State Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz, who is facing prosecution for alleged disclosure of secrets related to ayuso’s personal life.
several government ministers reacted to Feijóo’s video and the preceding events via social media platform ‘X’. Transport and Enduring Mobility Minister Óscar Puente accused Feijóo of deliberately “crispando” (heightening tensions), stating, “It’s clear Feijóo went to Coruña last night. And even in his moments of holiday and fun he is dedicated to crisping.”
Digital Transformation and Public Function Minister and PSOE-M Secretary General Óscar López added,”Polarization does not fall from the sky,it is not created alone. It is created by a small, scared, lost and self-conscious PP,every day.”
Minister of Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Cortes, Félix Bolaños, asserted that “this weekend” revealed “the political and ethical collapse of the PP,” which he described as “a branch of the ultras.” He criticized the PP, stating, “On Friday he planted the King and the Judiciary. Yesterday, his number two requested ‘digging a pit’ for the Government. Today insults the President with the mounts prevailing in the most toxic PP.”
