New Moms Share Raw Realities of Pregnancy, Postpartum & Motherhood on Korean Variety Show
Seoul, South Korea – A recent episode of MBNS “Let’s Go Go” featured a candid conversation between three new mothers – singer Son Dam-bi, entertainer Lee Eun-hyung, and singer Ayumi – offering a glimpse into the joys and challenges of marriage, pregnancy, and early parenthood. The discussion, hosted alongside Ahn Jung-hwan and Hong Hyun-hee,touched on everything from supportive spouses to the physical realities of postpartum recovery and the complex emotions surrounding motherhood. The conversation began with a lighthearted exchange about spousal support during pregnancy. Jason, Son Dam-bi’s husband, earned praise for ensuring she felt agreeable enough to continue with her pregnancy, boasting, “I ate all the food myself. So my wife said, ‘I think I can continue with this pregnancy.’ That’s my pride.” Lee Eun-hyung echoed the sentiment, recalling her own positive experience: “When I was pregnant, it was the best time in my life. My husband cooked all the food and made me healthy juice every day.” Son Dam-bi herself affirmed a feeling of contentment, stating, “I have nothing to be disappointed about. It was good as you were always good to me. I was the happiest.”
However, the conversation quickly shifted to the less glamorous aspects of new motherhood. Ayumi humorously, yet pointedly, highlighted the disparity in parental responsibilities, noting,”I had nothing to be disappointed about when I was pregnant, but I was so cheeky to have a child and sleep snoring next to him. When a baby cries, mothers wake up quickly, but fathers don’t wake up.” She further expressed frustration with being asked, “Do you wont to go to your mother?” prompting Lee Eun-hyung to sympathize and share her own tactic of redirecting the baby towards their father, admitting she “gaslight[s].”
The discussion then turned to postpartum recovery. Ahn Jung-hwan inquired about the difficulties of recovery, to which Son dam-bi responded, emphasizing the importance of a “golden time,” explaining, “It’s hard to go back unless you lose it at that time.” She detailed the physical toll, stating, “My abdominal muscles are all open, so even if I lose weight, my clothes don’t fit.” Despite the challenges, Son Dam-bi shared her impressive post-pregnancy weight loss, revealing she returned to her pre-pregnancy weight of 48kg from 67kg just three months after giving birth, attributing her success to starting with slow walks and targeted abdominal exercises.
The mothers also expressed deep gratitude for their own mothers. Lee Eun-hyung described her mother as “like Wonder Woman,” acknowledging the lack of modern conveniences available to previous generations.Ayumi shared a poignant story of her mother raising her alone in Japan after moving from Korea, expressing immense respect. Son Dam-bi recounted a tearful conversation with her own mother, realizing the pain she had caused her as a child and apologizing after becoming a mother herself.
The conversation concluded with a discussion about their children’s future aspirations. While Son Dam-bi stated she hadn’t given it much thought, Ayumi jokingly suggested her child could become a singer, but emphasized the importance of joining a financially stable company, referencing past struggles with a previous agency where she resorted to a diet of corn and milk.
“Let’s Go Go” season 5 airs every Saturday at 8:20 p.m. on MBN, continuing its format of visiting meaningful locations to showcase diverse life experiences.
