Astros Get Key offensive Boost as Jake meyers Returns from Injured List
ARLINGTON, Texas – the Houston Astros activated center fielder Jake Meyers from the injured list prior to Saturday’s game against the Texas Rangers, marking his return after nearly two months on the sidelines due to a strained right calf. Meyers sustained the injury during a game against the Cleveland Guardians on July 9th,requiring assistance from a trainer to leave the field before the frist pitch.
Meyers, 29, has been a productive force in the Astros’ lineup this season, boasting a .308 batting average with three home runs and 21 RBIs.
“Adding Jake, his defense and his offensive production he’s been showing this year,it stretches our lineup a little bit more,” Astros manager Joe Espada stated. “Excited to have him back.”
While typically batting seventh, Meyers was slotted ninth in the lineup for Saturday’s contest. Espada indicated the team will be monitoring Meyers’ condition closely, taking a “one day at a time” approach to manage his workload.
The Astros have struggled in Meyers’ absence, posting a 22-28 record since july 9th. Despite the recent dip in form, Houston entered Saturday’s game leading the AL West by three games over the Seattle Mariners, with an overall record of 77-65.
In corresponding moves, the astros recalled right-hander logan VanWey from Triple-A Sugar Land and optioned left-hander Colton Gordon and outfielder Jacob Melton to Sugar Land.
