Sony Reportedly Developing New Handheld Console to Rival Nintendo Switch
Oslo, Norway – November 16, 2023 – Sony is reportedly developing a successor to the PlayStation Portal, perhaps positioning the new device as a direct competitor to Nintendo’s forthcoming Switch 2, according to sources familiar with the matter. the project, internally codenamed “Canis,” aims to address limitations of the current Portal and deliver a standalone handheld gaming experience.
This development marks Sony’s most notable foray into the dedicated handheld market as the 2011 launch of the PlayStation Vita. While the 2023 PlayStation Portal requires a connection to a PlayStation 5 console to stream games, the rumored “Canis” is expected to feature independent processing power, allowing users to play titles without a base station. This shift in strategy comes as Nintendo prepares to release its next-generation console, widely anticipated to raise the bar for handheld gaming.Sony previously dominated the handheld space with the PlayStation Portable (PSP), launched in 2004, but has largely exited the market in recent years. The potential arrival of a new, standalone Sony handheld could considerably disrupt the portable gaming landscape, offering consumers a new choice beyond Nintendo’s established dominance. If the project remains on track, the new console could reach consumers as early as 2027.
