Philips’ Hue Gets a Major Upgrade with Motion-Detecting Smart Lights

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

philips⁣ Hue is expanding its ⁢smart lighting ecosystem with ‌”Huge MotionAware” technology, bringing motion-activated lighting to‌ a wider range ⁣of its bulbs and ⁣light strips. The update, rolling out with new product releases this fall, allows users to automate lighting based⁢ on movement ⁣within⁤ a room, creating more⁤ immersive and responsive home⁢ environments.

This feature arrives as smart home automation becomes increasingly complex, and as consumers ⁤seek more seamless‍ and intuitive⁣ experiences. While ⁣motion-sensing smart lights already ‍exist, Philips HueS approach aims⁤ to integrate⁣ this functionality directly into existing bulbs, eliminating ⁢the need for separate ⁣motion sensors in many setups.⁢ The rollout requires a new, upgraded Hue Bridge Pro, impacting current Hue‌ users who want to take advantage ‌of the technology.

to ‌enable Huge motionaware, users will need Philips’ new‍ third-generation Hue Bridge Pro, available for approximately $100. This bridge automatically ⁤activates the feature on compatible lights ⁢and also unlocks additional capabilities for Philips’ Zigbee bulbs, including advanced lighting scenes and⁤ remote control functionality. Philips states that the “vast majority” of its Hue products already support the new technology.

A compatibility list is ‍available ⁤on⁤ the Philips Hue support website, detailing which ⁣products ‍are not supported. The ‍company notes ⁣that nearly ⁤all Philips‍ Hue bulbs and light strips are compatible, including the⁤ latest models.

Most of the new Philips Hue products featuring huge ‍MotionAware will launch in North America starting in September, ⁢with additional products becoming available in‌ November.
