China Marks WWII Anniversary with Military Display, Signaling Global Ambitions
BEIJING – China showcased its growing military strength and geopolitical aspirations Wednesday with a large-scale military parade in Tiananmen Square commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The meticulously planned event featured thousands of soldiers, advanced weaponry, and a guest list including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, signaling a potential realignment of global power dynamics.
The parade,presided over by Chinese President Xi Jinping,served as a grand exhibition of China’s expanding influence and a subtle challenge to the U.S.-led international order. it comes at a time of heightened global tensions, particularly surrounding Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, and marks the first instance of a joint appearance by Xi, Putin, and Kim – a grouping recently labeled a “new axis of upheaval” by the Center for a New American Security.
Xi opened the event with a speech emphasizing China’s commitment to peace but also asserting its refusal to be “intimidated by any bullies.” He contrasted cooperation with confrontation, framing the moment as a choice between “win-win cooperation” and a ”zero-sum game.”
The display of military hardware, including China’s most advanced domestically produced weapons, artillery, and tanks, underscored the nation’s rapid military modernization. Attendance was by invitation only, with tens of thousands of specially selected guests observing the event.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump responded to the gathering via social media, accusing the three leaders of conspiring against the United States. “may President Xi and the splendid people of China have a great and lasting day of party. Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The united States of America,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
