Minecraft to Finally Expand Utility of Underused Copper Block
August 28, 2025 - after four years of limited functionality, Minecraft’s copper block is poised for a important overhaul. Swedish game developer Mojang Studios announced today that copper will be the central focus of its third “Game Drop” update of 2025.The update arrives as part of Mojang’s new system of more frequent, smaller updates-dubbed “Game Drops”-introduced in March 2025, designed to deliver consistent content to Minecraft’s dedicated fanbase.Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time, previously received larger, less frequent updates.
While dedicated players following test versions of the game where already aware, the broader Minecraft community learned today that copper, added to the game in 2021, will receive expanded uses. Currently, copper primarily serves a decorative purpose, a limitation that has led players to label it an “unneeded ore” due to the broader utility of minerals like gold and iron, which are used to craft weapons, armor, and tools. Mojang has not yet detailed the specific new functionalities planned for copper.
