Schreiner‘s 11 Saves Not Enough as james Madison Field Hockey Falls to Stanford
COLLEGE PARK,MD – James Madison field hockey goalkeeper Molly Schreiner recorded a career-high 11 saves,but the Dukes suffered a 1-0 loss to Stanford sunday morning at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The defeat dropped JMU to 1-1 on the season,while Stanford also moved to 1-1.The game’s lone goal came at the 10:53 mark of the third quarter when Natalie Hoppe deflected a pass from Scout Butler during a penalty corner possibility. Daisy Ford secured the shutout for Stanford with three saves. Despite the loss, Schreiner’s performance marked her second career game with double-digit saves, following a 10-save outing against Cal on September 22, 2024.
james Madison faced a notable offensive disadvantage, being outshot 25-4 and conceding 14 penalty corners while earning just three.Alice Roeper placed two of her three shots on goal for the Dukes,and Sydney Raguini added one shot on cage.
the Dukes’ defense was under constant pressure, particularly in the first half, were Schreiner made four saves as Stanford built an 11-1 shot advantage and 4-0 edge in penalty corners. Despite Schreiner accumulating eight saves by halftime, the game remained scoreless. Stanford finally broke through early in the third quarter with Hoppe’s goal. Late in the third, Roeper’s two shots from penalty corners were stopped by Ford. JMU pulled Schreiner for an extra attacker with 1:17 remaining but failed to register a shot on goal.
Since 2023, James Madison has lost 12 games by a single goal, including four in overtime and three against ranked opponents, posting a 20-19 record overall. Schreiner’s 11 saves represent the most by a JMU goalkeeper since Brandelynn heinbaugh made 16 saves against William & Mary on August 25,2023. Stanford’s 25 shots were the most against JMU since Maryland also recorded 25 on September 15, 2019, and the 14 penalty corners conceded were the most since Old dominion had 16 on October 13 of last season. JMU’s four shots were the fewest as the team produced the same number against Miami (Ohio) on September 20,2024.
James Madison will continue its road trip with a game against No. 17 Liberty in Lynchburg, Virginia, on Wednesday, September 3, at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
