Bulgarian orthodox Church Celebrates Saint Alexander Nevsky, Commemorating Liberation
SOFIA, Bulgaria – August 30, 2024 – Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan Daniel presided over a solemn Holy Liturgy at the Patriarchal Cathedral of st. Alexander Nevski today, marking the commemoration of saint Alexander Nevsky and his significance in Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule.
The annual observance honors both the transfer of the relics of Saint Alexander Nevsky to Saint Petersburg in 1724 and the pivotal role the saint’s patronage played during the Russo-Turkish War, which ultimately led to Bulgaria’s independence after five centuries of Ottoman domination. The party underscores the deep ancient and spiritual connection between Bulgaria and Russia, and the enduring importance of faith in national identity. The event serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom and a call for continued unity and spiritual strength within the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the nation.
Participating in the liturgy alongside Patriarch Daniel were Bishop of Melnik Gerasim, Secretary General of the Holy Synod; Bishop of Zionium, abbot of the Bach Monastery; and Bishop Meletius, Rector of the Sofia Theological Seminary “St. John Rilski.”
During his homily,Patriarch Daniel emphasized the historical context of the celebration,stating,”Today we celebrate the transfer of the relics of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevski to Petersburg in 1724. A liberation war,after which Bulgaria resurrects after a five-century slavery.”
