Mollis, Switzerland – Preparations are underway for the 2025 Swiss Wrestling Festival (Eidgenössisches Schwingen und Älplerfest – ESV) in Mollis, Glarus, raising the question of whether the next “schwingerkönig” (wrestling king) will be crowned under rainy skies. The event, a cornerstone of Swiss cultural heritage, is scheduled to take place from September 5th to 7th, 2025.
The ESV is held every three years, rotating between different cantons. The festival is not merely a sporting event; it’s a vibrant celebration of traditional Swiss wrestling (Schwingen), alpine culture, and rural life. Schwingen,a unique form of wrestling,dates back centuries and is deeply rooted in the traditions of Swiss mountain communities. Wrestlers, known as “Schwingers,” compete in a sawdust-covered arena, aiming to throw their opponents to the ground.
The Battle of Näfels, commemorated annually in April, holds important historical importance for the region. fought on April 9, 1388, it was a pivotal victory for the Swiss Confederation against the Habsburgs, solidifying Swiss independence.
