Kim Hyun-jong Considered for US Ambassador Role Amidst Concerns
Seoul,South Korea – August 22,2025 – Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Hyun-jong is reportedly being considered by President Lee for the position of South Korean Ambassador to the United States.This progress comes as President Lee seeks to fill key diplomatic posts.

Though, Kim’s potential appointment is facing resistance from within the Democratic Party and raising concerns from the United States and Japan. Sources within the Democratic Party, including individuals who previously worked with Kim during the Moon Jae-in management, have expressed reservations. One core party member reportedly stated, “Those who have worked with former deputy general manager in the Moon Jae -in administration shakes their heads,” indicating skepticism about his suitability for the role. Concerns were also raised regarding Kim’s conduct during a recent presidential meeting, where he was perceived as readily assigning blame to others.
The United States has reportedly conveyed it’s discomfort with Kim’s past actions regarding the General Security of Military Details Agreement (GSOMIA). kim was actively involved in efforts to dismantle GSOMIA, a crucial security pact between South Korea and Japan, which the US views as vital for regional stability.Japan has also reacted negatively, with critical articles appearing in Japanese media when Kim was considered for the position of diplomatic security advisor during Lee Jae-myung’s tenure as a representative, coinciding with export regulations imposed by Japan.
Despite these challenges, the possibility of Kim’s appointment remains open. Sources indicate President Lee initially hesitated due to these concerns, but the situation could evolve. The decision is likely influenced by a complex interplay of political and diplomatic factors.
