Bangkok, Thailand – The Government Savings Bank (GSB) of Thailand has announced a complete aid package totaling over 6.6 million baht (approximately $182,000 USD) to support Thai soldiers injured in recent clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border and civilians impacted by the unrest. The initiative, spearheaded under the direction of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Pichai Chunawachihira, aims to provide both immediate financial relief and long-term economic opportunities for those affected.
The conflict, stemming from disputed territory and ancient tensions, has resulted in casualties and injuries among Thai military personnel stationed along the border. The GSB’s immediate response includes a direct financial contribution of 50,000 baht (approximately $1,380 USD) per injured soldier, totaling 4.3 million baht ($119,000 USD). This assistance is intended to cover medical expenses and provide immediate support during recovery.Beyond immediate aid, the GSB is also focusing on sustainable support for the families of both deceased and disabled soldiers, and also affected civilians. the bank will offer free vocational training programs designed to enhance employability and provide seed funding of 30,000 baht (approximately $830 USD) per person – a total investment of 1.05 million baht ($29,000 USD) – to help launch new businesses or income-generating activities.
This latest commitment builds upon earlier GSB contributions totaling 1.314 million baht ($36,200 USD) provided to support temporary shelters in the provinces of Surin, Sisaket, Buriram, Ubon Ratchathani, and Trat. These funds were used to supply essential items such as blankets, dried and cooked food, and drinking water to those displaced by the conflict.
“The Government Savings Bank remains committed to its role as a social bank, ensuring that no one is left behind during these tough times,” stated Weerachai Amkol Suwet, Deputy Director of the GSB, Acting director of the government Savings Bank. “We are dedicated to supporting the brave men and women who defend our nation’s sovereignty, and also the civilians who have been impacted by this unrest, helping them to overcome these challenges and rebuild their lives.”
