BAKER CITY, OR – Baker City is preparing for an influx of Oregon’s top municipal leaders as it hosts the Oregon mayors Association (OMA) summer conference next week, August 14-16. The event, taking place at the historic Geiser Grand Hotel, is expected to inject meaningful revenue into the local economy and highlight Baker City’s unique attractions.
Mayor randy Daugherty expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This is a fantastic chance to showcase Baker City and Eastern Oregon to mayors from across the state. Events like these are crucial for fostering collaboration and sharing best practices.” The OMA typically holds its summer conference in larger metropolitan areas, making Baker City’s selection a notable win for the community.
City Manager Barry Murphy confirmed that approximately 60 mayors representing cities of all sizes – from Portland to Ashland – have registered to attend. With accompanying spouses, speakers, and staff, the total attendance is projected to reach around 120 individuals. The economic impact is estimated at $25,000 – $35,000 based on hotel occupancy, restaurant sales, and local attraction visits.
The conference agenda balances formal sessions with opportunities to experience Baker City and Baker County. A key presentation on August 15th will feature a local panel comprised of Tabor Clarke, owner of Clarke’s Jewelry, and Ariel Reker,Executive Director of Baker city Downtown. They will detail the city’s successful strategies for revitalizing its historic downtown core, including the recent implementation of a façade advancement grant program and the popular “First Friday” art walk events.

Key issues expected to be discussed at the conference include affordable housing, infrastructure funding, and strategies for attracting and retaining a skilled workforce. The OMA’s legislative priorities are heavily influenced by the discussions held at these annual conferences.
