Hamilton Movie Release Date Announced: Sept. 5 Theatrical Debut

Breaking: The original filmed version of Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s Tony Award-winning musical “Hamilton” will return to movie theaters nationwide, including Puerto Rico, on September 5th. Tickets go on sale August 6th.

The theatrical release marks a significant shift in distribution strategy for the production, initially planned for an October 2021 cinematic debut before being moved to Disney+ in July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This “live capture” of the original Broadway cast differs from a conventional film adaptation, as seen with 2021’s “In The Heights.”

“I have an announcement!” Miranda revealed during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” “Tomorrow is the 10-year anniversary of ‘Hamilton,’ and we’ve been celebrating all year. But we have one more way to celebrate. We filmed most of the original cast performing in ‘Hamilton’ in 2016, and we always wanted to release it theatrically, but then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so that everyone could see it at home whenever thay wanted. But, sept. 5, you will be able to see ‘Hamilton’ in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico.”

“Hamilton” premiered on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on August 6, 2015, and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The musical garnered 11 Tony Awards in 2016, including Best Musical, and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The original principal cast featured Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, Christopher Jackson as George washington, Jonathan Groff as King George III, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, and Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton.

The Disney+ version of “Hamilton” received critical acclaim and earned two Primetime Emmy Awards from 12 nominations, winning for Outstanding Variety Special. The rights to the film were acquired by Disney for $75 million in a deal negotiated by Endeavor Content on behalf of Miranda.Endeavor reportedly considered offers from other studios, including Warner Bros., before finalizing the agreement with Disney.

In June, many members of the original cast reunited for a special performance at the 77th Tony awards, celebrating the musical’s 10th anniversary. The performance was a highlight of the broadcast and generated significant social media buzz.
