Google Renames New Gemini-Assistant Voices for Nest Mini

Google Assistant‘s voice options are undergoing a meaningful overhaul, wiht several names being updated to more recognizable botanical terms. This change comes as Google prepares to integrate Gemini, its advanced AI model, into its virtual assistant, potentially phasing out the “Google Assistant” branding altogether.

The rebranding effort sees six of the ten available voices renamed. Previously known as “Ivy,” the voice is now “Violet,” a change noted for its more positive association. Similarly, “Verbena” has been replaced by “Magnolia,” a name likely to resonate more with the general public. The article suggests that “Eucalyptus” may have higher brand recognition than its predecessor, “Calathea.”

In addition to the name changes, one voice description has been modified. The voice previously identified as “Fern” now offers a “Warm” tone, a shift from its original “Bright” characteristic. The author notes that, to their ear, all the voices sound identical, and encourages readers to listen to both the old and new sets of voices.

These voice updates coincide with Google’s broader strategy to enhance its AI capabilities. Last week, Google hinted at “major improvements” for Google Assistant, a move widely interpreted as the integration of Gemini. This transition signals a potential departure from the established “Google Assistant” brand, with Gemini even being introduced to Google TV instead of an upgraded Assistant. Public testing for these enhancements began last year, with a full rollout anticipated for the fall.
