New York State Shatters Catfish Record with Massive Channel Catfish Catch

New York’s reputation as a premier fishing destination is expanding beyond its well-known bass, walleye, and trout populations. anglers are now discovering teh state’s important potential for landing extraordinary catfish, with a recent record-breaking catch highlighting this burgeoning chance.

Dylan Kampnich of Dexter, New York, recently reeled in a colossal channel catfish measuring 40 inches and weighing an astounding 37 pounds, 9 ounces. The impressive catch was made on May 3rd from Black River Bay in Jefferson County, while fishing from the shore with his son. This monumental catfish surpassed the previous three-year-old record, also caught in Black River Bay, by nearly two pounds, solidifying its place as the largest channel catfish ever reported in New York State.

While Lake Champlain is often cited for its exceptional fishing, the New York State Department of environmental Conservation (DEC) emphasizes that catfish are abundant throughout the state. According to the DEC, “Catfish are found across much of the state, and you probably have a waterbody near you that has a good catfish population.” This suggests that opportunities to catch large catfish are not limited to specific renowned locations but are widely accessible to anglers across New York.

With ample summer days remaining, now is an ideal time for families to engage in fishing activities. The upcoming National Hunting and Fishing Day on September 27th presents another excellent occasion for outdoor enthusiasts to cast a line.
