Skye Blakely Eyes Return at U.S. Gymnastics Championships

Gator Star to Compete on Bars and Beam After Achilles Injury

Two-time world team gold medallist Skye Blakely is set to make her comeback at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in New Orleans, focusing on her strongest events—uneven bars and balance beam.

Strategic Comeback Planned

Blakely confirmed her participation exclusively to Olympics.com, stating, Just bars and beam. I think, for me, that’s just the best plan. She emphasized a cautious approach to her return following a significant injury.

“I don’t think there’s any point in rushing back to all-around or the leg events. I’m able to safely and healthily do bars and beam, so I’m having fun pushing that and getting back all those skills that I was doing last year.”

While she is cautiously training floor and vault, Blakely indicated that 2025 is not the year for a full all-around comeback. This strategic decision comes after a challenging year for the gymnast.

Road to Recovery

Just over a year ago, Blakely was a strong contender for the Paris 2024 Olympic team, having secured a second-place finish behind Simone Biles at the 2024 U.S. Nationals. However, a torn Achilles tendon during practice before the U.S. trials derailed her Olympic aspirations.

Despite the setback, Blakely has been diligently working her way back, participating in her freshman season with the University of Florida Gators. Her performances there have been primarily on the uneven bars, signaling her focus for future competitions.

Positive Outlook for Championship Return

Blakely expressed optimism about her return to elite competition, noting the progress made in her recovery. I’m feeling good. I’m mainly just excited to be back, she shared. Knowing it’s been a year, been through a lot, surgery, my foot’s gotten stronger. I’m happy to know that I’m at the skill level again to compete domestically.

The U.S. Gymnastics Championships are scheduled for August 7-10 in New Orleans. Last year, U.S. gymnasts earned an average of 14.75 on the uneven bars in elite competitions, highlighting the high standard Blakely aims to meet.Source 2025
