Singapore Urges Calm in Thailand-Cambodia Border Clashes
Deadly Disputes Erupt, Prompting Diplomatic Intervention
Singapore has voiced deep concern and called for immediate de-escalation as deadly clashes between Thai and Cambodian military forces flare up along their disputed border. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) issued a statement urging all parties to exercise restraint and cease hostilities.
Calls for Diplomatic Resolution
The MFA’s statement, released on July 24, emphasized the need for diplomatic means to resolve the ongoing conflict. The ministry stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of all civilians caught in the crossfire. So far, there are no reports of any Singaporean citizens being injured as a result of the border confrontations.
Singaporeans are strongly advised to postpone any travel to the border regions between Thailand and Cambodia. Those currently in either country should closely follow local news developments, adhere to directives from the respective governments, and maintain vigilance for their personal security.
Escalating Violence and Historical Roots
The conflict, which resulted in at least 12 fatalities on July 24, represents a significant escalation of a long-standing territorial disagreement. These disputes have roots stretching back over a century and involve areas within the “Emerald Triangle,” a region where the borders of Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos converge. The intensified violence has raised international alarm.
The MFA also reminded Singaporeans residing in or planning to visit Cambodia and Thailand to register their presence with the ministry via its e-registration portal, if they have not already done so. This facilitates consular assistance in emergencies.
Consular Assistance Information
For Singaporean nationals requiring consular support in Cambodia or Thailand, the respective Singapore Embassies in Phnom Penh and Bangkok are available to assist. Additionally, the MFA duty office operates 24 hours a day. They can be reached by phone at +65 6379 8800 or +65 6379 8855, or via email at mfa_duty_officer@mfa.gov.sg.
