Iowa Wrestlers Kueter and Kennedy Triumph at U20 & U23 World Team Trials

The university of Iowa wrestling program is celebrating a meaningful victory as Ben Kueter and Patrick Kennedy have both claimed U20 and U23 World Team Trials titles,respectively. The wins occurred in Geneva, Ohio, marking a strong start to June for the Hawkeyes.

Kueter, competing in the U20 125kg division, secured his title, aiming to add a second age-group World gold medal to his collection later this year in Pontevedra. Kueter, a 2022 U20 World Champion at 97kg, recently announced his decision to transition to a full-time wrestling focus for the next 10 months to pursue his goals of a second U20 world title and an NCAA championship. He stated that this move is not a permanent end to his football career, with plans to return to spring football.

Patrick Kennedy dominated the U23 79kg division.He faced Julian Ramirez, the 2023 U23 74kg Nationals champion from Spartan Combat RTC/Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, in the championship series. Kennedy achieved victory in both matches by technical fall, with identical 10-0 scores, demonstrating strong offensive control throughout the series.

These victories follow the recent Grand Opening Event for the new Goschke Family Wrestling Training Center and the Bob & Kathy Nicolls Wrestling Room, hosted by the University of Iowa Center for Advancements on May 30th. Head Coach Tom Brands expressed his satisfaction with the new facility, stating, “I think you have to have the full package and we have the whole package now.” He also acknowledged the evolving landscape of college athletics, noting the impact of NIL and new rules, and emphasized the importance of top-tier facilities. “I think facilities, uniforms and everything that goes with being the latest and greatest is critically important.This (facility is) pretty late and great,” Brands commented.
