Samsung has reportedly achieved a significant milestone in foldable display durability, with its latest foldable devices reportedly surviving up to 500,000 folds in internal testing. This figure, if accurate, represents a ample leap forward for the technology.
This advancement could also bode well for Apple, which is rumored to be preparing its own foldable device.Reports suggest that Apple’s foldable will utilize a display panel supplied by Samsung Display, perhaps benefiting from Samsung’s advancements in durability. Moreover, the opening and closing mechanism is said to be developed by M-Tech, the same partner that supplies Samsung, with the aim of making the screen crease nearly imperceptible.
However, a degree of caution is warranted. Past experiences with foldable phones highlight the potential gap between laboratory testing and real-world usage. As an example, early tests on the frist Samsung Galaxy Fold revealed display and hinge damage after just 119,380 folds, falling short of Samsung’s initial 200,000-fold claim at the time. While Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) technology has evolved since then, and the earlier tests were conducted under extreme conditions, real-world performance remains the ultimate test of durability.
