Measles Cases Rise in Ontario: Sudbury Reports First Infection

Measles has reached northeastern Ontario, with Sudbury Public Health and Districts reporting its first case of the highly contagious disease. The affected individual is an infant too young to have received the measles vaccination.

Christina Baier, manager at the Division of Sudbury Public health Protection and District, emphasized that measles can spread rapidly among unvaccinated individuals and can lead to severe illness. Sudbury Public Health and Districts has directly notified those within its service area who may have been exposed to the virus.

Ontario has recorded 2,342 confirmed or probable cases of measles since the outbreak began in the fall of 2024, according to the most recent public health data from July 15. The disease peaked in April and May, with over 200 new infections reported weekly during that period. The western part of Northern Ontario was among the regions reporting the highest number of cases last month.

Sudbury Public Health and Districts is collaborating with the Ontario Ministry of Health and other local public health organizations to mitigate the spread of measles. They reiterate that vaccination remains the most effective protection against the disease.
