James Gunn, teh director behind the upcoming DC Universe film Superman, has revealed that Henry Cavill was not dismissed from the Superman role by him, but rather that outside influences within DC made it unachievable for Cavill to continue. Gunn stated that Cavill himself wished to be the one to announce his departure from the role, a sentiment Gunn found understandable and “unfair” to Cavill.
Gunn clarified that Cavill was never officially cast for future projects under the new DCU direction. He also expressed his willingness to work with Cavill again, stating, “I woudl love to put Henry in something.” This comes after Gunn previously denied reports of firing Cavill, explaining that Cavill was simply not hired for upcoming installments.
In 2018, Gunn had declined an offer to direct Cavill in Man Of Steel 2, which was part of the previous DC film continuity. The recent NME review of the new Superman film, which stars David Corenswet as the titular hero, awarded it three stars. The review praised Gunn’s ability to capture the essence of the comic book Superman and highlighted the introduction of characters like Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) as adding depth to the DC Universe.
The review also noted that while the central conflict of good versus evil was conventional, the film’s portrayal of Superman as an alien peacekeeper could perhaps spark political discussions. The reviewer humorously concluded by calling for more screen time for Krypto, the super-dog.
