Cultural summer in the south Vienna: the “monster night” reinvents the theater

Shakespearean Play Comes Alive with Community in France

“Night of the Kings” production embraces local talent and inclusive spirit

A unique theatrical experience is unfolding in southern Vienna, France, as amateur and professional actors collaborate on a fresh take on William Shakespeare’s “La Nuit des Rois” (“Twelfth Night”). The production emphasizes accessibility and local involvement at every level.

A Community Affair

Since October 2024, around fifteen local partners and organizations have joined forces with approximately twenty participants of varying ages, some of whom are taking the stage for the first time. This inclusive project encourages community members to participate in all aspects, from acting to volunteering behind the scenes, even crafting costumes and sets. Partners include local companies, associations, **Drac Nouvelle-Aquitaine**, the community of communes of Vienna and Gartempus, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, and the Department of Vienne.

Alongside the Shakespearean play, the company is also presenting “The Revenge of Malvolio” by **Tim Crouch**, offering audiences a look at contemporary writing that resonates with Shakespeare’s themes.

Accessibility at Its Core

The “Night Monster” production embodies the ethos of the Monster studio, a theater company dedicated to making theater accessible to everyone, regardless of experience. The project welcomes local residents, retirees, workers, students, and even those new to speaking French. According to a 2023 report by the European Commission, ensuring access to culture for all citizens is vital for promoting social inclusion and cohesion (European Commission).

Creative Collaboration

Beyond the performance, the production incorporates diverse creative elements. Costumes are being designed and created by neo-Aquitaine costume designer **Pauline Germon**, with the help of volunteer seamstresses.

Musical interludes will feature amateur musicians and singers blending medieval music, popular song covers, and even Elvis Presley tunes performed by a local impersonator.

The set design is being handled by residents of the establishment or service of work assistance (ESAT) of Adriers, highlighting the project’s commitment to inclusivity. Additionally, residents of the EHPAD will attend a private rehearsal.

Adding a unique touch, the actors will arrive by boat on the Vienne river, and a Tyrolean traverse above the stage promises an unexpected moment.

Honoring Local Heritage

The “Monster Night” draws inspiration from participatory creations initiated in the 1980s by **Jean-Marie Sillard** at the Théâtre de Verdure de l’Isle Jourdain. The project celebrates the artistic talents of South Vienna residents in an exceptional setting near the viaduct.

The monster studio hopes to establish “The Monster Nights” as an annual summer event. Future plans include expanding the event’s duration, incorporating more artistic contributions from local professionals and amateurs, and exploring the theme of homelessness.

Cultural summer, a national initiative by the Ministry of Culture since 2020, aims to connect people with culture during the summer and provide support to artists by offering opportunities for dissemination and payment.
