Frederick W. Smith, the founder of FedEx, whose vision revolutionized global commerce, has passed away at the age of 80. His legacy extends far beyond the overnight delivery service; he profoundly shaped Memphis, becoming a pillar of the community.
A Pioneer’s Impact
Smith was born on August 11, 1944, in Marks, Mississippi. He established FedEx in 1971, with operations beginning in 1973. Early financial struggles once led Smith to a Las Vegas blackjack table to secure funds, a story illustrating his determination.
FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam shared a message with employees Saturday night: “Fred was more than just the pioneer of an industry and the founder of our great company. He was the heart and soul of FedEx – its PSP culture, values, integrity, and spirit. He was a mentor to many and a source of inspiration to all. He was also a proud father, grandfather, husband, Marine, and friend; please keep the entire Smith family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, FedEx played a pivotal role in distributing vaccines globally, highlighting its vast impact. In 2023, FedEx delivered more than 1.2 billion packages and documents to customers worldwide (USPS 2024).

Former Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland stated, “Fred Smith was the most important Memphian of all time. He benefitted our city in every way possible, and he allowed generations of Memphians to achieve the American dream.”
Philanthropist Gayle Rose recalled Smith’s compassion following the death of her son.
