“Dr. Death” Designs Dementia “Killer Switch”
A controversial figure is making waves again. Dr. Philip Nitschke, who previously created the “suicide pod,” has developed a device. This new invention would allow individuals with dementia to predetermine the timing of their own deaths.
The Chilling New Device
The mechanism, planned for placement in the leg or stomach, would use an internal clock. It would release a fatal substance if not reset. This is designed to address the concerns of those fearing the loss of mental capacity.
“In all countries with end of life legislation in place, there is a mandatory requirement that the person seeking suicide assistance must have ‘mental capacity’, for example, they must know what they are doing,”
—Dr. Philip Nitschke
Dr. Nitschke explained that it is made for those fearing mental decline. Individuals could choose the moment of the switch’s activation. The device is expected to cost approximately £9,000. A prototype could undergo initial testing soon.
Criticism and Controversy
The proposal has ignited strong criticism. Alistair Thompson of Care Not Killing labeled Nitschke’s move as a “chilling development.” The group comprises disability and human rights organizations, medical professionals, and religious groups.

The device is designed to prevent a loss of agency. It would give people with a dementia diagnosis control. However, concerns remain. In 2023, over 10,000 people in the U.S. chose assisted suicide, according to the CDC (CDC).
