In a statement released shortly after the November accident through his employer, VRT, Waes admitted to driving under the influence and expressed remorse.

The fact is that I went to a restaurant and café that evening, and that I had drunk too much to be allowed to drive the car. Yet I got into my car to get home. Incomprehensible. I should never have done that, there is no doubt about that. I realise that I had great luck.
